New Era, New Strategy:

Internationalization & Transformation by China’s Multinationals

Emerging market countries are rising to become the driver of globalization in developing the world economy. The 2008-2010 economic recession influenced the traditional developed countries by sapping them of their former motivation to participate in and lead global development. Based on the opportunities that have opened up as a result, enterprises from emerging market countries, such as China, are contributing to this retreat by developed country entities as well as undertaking increasing global responsibilities to establish the new economic growth path. According to Statistical Set of 2016 China Foreign Direct Investment, with the background that the global FDI declined by 2%, China FDI had 34.7% year-over-year growth, reaching a new historical high 196.1 billion USD and accounting for 19.5% of the global total. 24,400 domestic investors set up 37,200 FDI enterprises in total which covered 190 countries in all regions of the world. There are 765 FDI merger and acquisition cases. The direct investment reached 86.5 billion USD. It is now incontrovertible that a new era, marked by heavy participation of emerging market enterprises, has now arrived.

Of special significance is the fact that emerging market countries, and above all China and its government, are trying to develop "new strategies" to promote the further development of globalization, including the successive implementation of "going global", RMB internationalization, and "One Belt One Road" strategy. The initiative of “One Belt and One Road” is a Chinese “way” (daolu) that advances globalization and aims to protect the free system of global trade and the open structure of the world economy. It is projected that the countries connected to “One Belt and One Road” will contribute 80% of global GDP increment in 2050, thereby becoming a new engine of global economic development.

In view of that, taking “New Era, New Strategy: Internationalization & Transformation by China’s Multinationals” as our main topic, East China University of Science and Technology together with the University of San Francisco will hold the 3rd symposium on May 26 in Shanghai. This symposium will provide a platform for sharing ideas and insights among scholars, business executives, entrepreneurs, and policy-makers in terms of current and future research on issues of internationalization & transformation by China’s Multinationals, as well as the internationalization of emerging market firms.

Theme:

    This symposium aims to provide a platform for both scholars and practitioners to share ideas. We appreciate and encourage any topics about the internationalization of China’s Multinationals. 

Submission Guidelines:

We invite scholars to present research and raise questions that concern China’s multinationals. Sessions such as Case Study Workshop, Excellent Students’ Research Workshop will be offered. Each author (either as a single author or as a co-author) may submit a maximum of three submissions to this conference. Accepted papers will be presented at the conference as either paper presentations or roundtable discussion sessions.
